The Advanced Fetal Heart Monitoring course expands on knowledge and physiological principles presented in the AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring Course. This course uses a case study approach to support analysis of complicated patient clinical information and tracings. The course emphasizes the physiology of fetal-maternal oxygenation, instrumentation, interpretation of tracings and the selection of interventions as well as communication and documentation techniques. An optional integration test is available.
AFM Course Objectives:
- Describe physiologic principles of maternal and fetal oxygen transfer as they apply to principles of fetal heart monitoring.
- Recognize fetal cardiac arrhythmia patterns and describe potential outcomes associated with these patterns.
- Analyze complex case studies and tracings utilizing standardized terminology.
- Apply perinatal risk management principles, communication techniques and documentation strategies to complex and challenging patient care scenarios.
